SCAMS:
This from Judy Maas on 5/28/2012:
By the way, this morning I received two emails supposedly from our member Mimi Mattock. They just said hello on the subject
line, and then said something like Check this out when I opened them. I went no further before deleting them. I'm quite
sure this was a virus and encourage the rest of you to not open things like these if they seem questionable. I don't know
if these this morning went to any others on our membership list, but they may have.
UPS Phishing expedition
Clark Howard (radio host) today (11/13/12) warned that someone
claiming to be a UPS agent may send an e-mail to you stating that a package has been returned and you need to give them
your phone number so they can call to schedule a delivery. When they call they request your credit card number and 3 digit
code to pay for the "redelivery fee." Needless to say they clean out your credit card rapidly. Do not give your credit card
information to such a UPS person. So far FedEx and DHL have not had their names used, YET.
Some Friendship Force members have had their computer address
books compromised and an email is going out to their contacts with a link to NB news 15. Do not open this link!
This is from SMUD (2/21/2013) If you get a phone call directing you
immediately to a payment facility to pay a past ue SMUD bill or risk losing
service you are very likely the target of a SCAM. Ask the person's name, then hang up and call SMUD at this number for residential
customers: 1-888-742-7683
NB: I have also
received several e-mails allegedly from my internet provider threatening to shut
down my e-mail service if I do not click on a link and give them all my personal information.
NB:
I have also received similar phishing e-mails from various banks seeking similar
information, many of which I have no accounts with
r. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your
Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any
of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states,
including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over
the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.
The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide
alerts on their web sites , warning consumers about the fraud. Check it out here:http://www.fbi.gov/page2/june06/jury_scams060206.htm
